  • Cultural and historical heritage:
Cultural centre is island Krapanj. Island is known for old houses built in stone and a lot narrow streets which make labyrinths through the island. A special section makes the Monastery of St. Cross, in whose place in 1523. was built a church which was upgraded to current design in 1937. The monastery keeps the values protected by the state. The most valuable exhibits are the “Last Supper” (16th century) and the Black Madonna on the Throne “(Renaissance). The monastery library keeps the other values, such as books of the Bible from 1474. and 23 incunabula’s. The monastery has opened a small museum that contains a collection of sponges, corals, amphorae and ancient tableware.
Annually, traditional feast regarding Our Lady of the Angels (2nd August) held on Krapanj. In late July the local Children’s sing event held (we have a cultural society Spužvar) and in early August on Krapanj held Croatian championship in high jump at the open.
In the vicinity during the summer months, numerous cultural and sporting events are held. We should mention the International Children’s Festival in June, the Evening of Dalmatian chanson in Šibenik in August and the feast of the Assumption in Vrpolje mid-August.
  • History of sponge harvest/industry on Krapanj:
How to hunt, identify and processing sponges, Krapanj locals have learned by fra Antun Greek from Crete. In its early stage of harvesting/hunting, sponge was obtained at lower depths and were hunted by harpoon. After came diving equipment. Late 19th Century crew for sponge harvesting/hunting consisted of about 8 people, of which only two or three crew members were divers, two of them row, two were working on the air pump while two were trampled, washed and dried taken sponges. Then the sponge harvesting/hunting was forbidden every third year.
To advance the sponge harvesting/hunting, in 1893. was established a community where the maritime authorities in Trieste donated diving equipment. Late 19th Century in community has been working about 14 divers.
In 1924. authorities have banned hunting sponges crews who had diving equipment at depths less than 16 m so the crew without the equipment could equally participate in the harvesting. Till 1940. community had about 20 diving equipment and crews and up to 400 people were living from this activity. Till 1912. sponge was not processed but only trampled and dried. That has an influence on price. From the aforementioned year, sodium sulfate was introduce in processing sponges, which has helped remove the calcium that contributes that sponge are white – yellowish color and increases the price.
