Drašnice, a small village situated about ten kilometers south of Makarska, on the way to Dubrovnik. Today there are more than three hundred inhabitants, at the end of the nineteenth century, it had a population of over 900 people.
The very name of the place Drašnice originated from thorn liquor, which occurs abundantly in the wider area of Dalmatia. The place itself was first mentioned in Turkish documents from the late 15th century. But life in the area Drašnica flourished since ancient times. The remains of material culture in the territory Drašnica date back even more than 8,000 years back in history. Buildings and ruins are remains of the Illyrians, the ancient Balkan Peninsula. A minority of tumuli is situated in the coastal zone, and most of them located in mountainous in Gaza, where are the ruins.
For a sizeable complex, where the olive trees today, used to be a settlement from the Roman times. Otherwise, in this area you can trace the continuity of the prehistoric times - far rather big reconnaissance tumulus there was an antique settlement. In this area you can in a few seconds to collect as building or kitchen pottery material!!!
According to legend, this settlement was ruined by unknown barbarians after the fall of the Roman Empire, who had just rushed through from east to west, to Italy and France.
The early Middle Ages, ie the period from the eighth to the eleventh century, it is very blurry when it comes to historical events in the area of Makarska Riviera. Only sporadically some indications referring to some events. Not far from the area mentioned above where life flourished in the Roman period, the early 12th century raises the St. Michael's church, above the neighboring town lifestyle.
At the end of the fifteenth century the Turks in Bosnia, and cause migration of the Bosnian population that escapes to the coast. Among them were the Franciscans, who found it quite suitable to raise a small church and a monastery in Drašnice. But, used to a strong storm, which sometimes blow at the foot of Mt, fled from Drašnica south to ten kilometers away resort - Živogošće.

What makes specific Drašnice are well-preserved stone house from under Biokovo belt, which was inhabited until the great earthquake of 1962. That same year, she began to build the Adriatic highway, which allowed for the migration of the population in coastal areas. It also strengthens and tourism, and life just overnight moved to the mainland. Drašnice are small local Pompeii, because the coastal in can feel the spirit of the time as it was dominant for centuries in this country. There are mentioned the old stone houses, in front of some are ancient tools for processing olives - Turanj, and within each home and today is an authentic interior.
