Excursion Possibilities

The Učka mountain, a symbol of the Kvarner coast and Istria dwellers, owing to its geological structure, geomorphology, climate, (climatic barrier), to the luxuriance and diversity of wood, vegetation, endemic flora and fauna, autochtonous cultures and architectural heritage, was proclaimed a natural park in 1999.
The surface area of the park is approximately 146 km2 , on a length of 25 km, from the eastern parts of Ćićarija to Plominska draga. Its eastern part is covered by Mediterranean vegetation, as well as with pine and beech woods, while the western part is much barer. Of the breeding cultures at the foot of Učka, in the Lovran area, chestnut («maruni») woods and cherry orchards are well known and several days’ long manifestations are dedicated each year to the fruits of these culltures – the Days of Cherries in June and the Chestnut Days «Marunada» in October.

Učka Natural Park

The town has developed on an exceptional geographical, traffic and geo-strategic location, training life with tenacity, experience and emotional perceptions of the numerous, secular historical and political changes.
A life permeated with water, originating from the sea, the river, from springs staring at the open sea, but also turned to the significance and the fruits of its hinterland. Created sometime in the prehistoric times as an important spot on the line of the so-called Liburnian limes, Rijeka has matured on the track of rulers and armies, conquerors and destroyers, protected within town walls, through open town gates and along the Rječina banks.
Owing to its status of free town, it has developed owing to the courageous and forward-looking architects, innovators, shipbuilders, industrialists, merchants and editors. By road and rail it attracts and brings Central Europe to the sea and absorbs the knowledge of scientists and spiritual leaders. It is grateful to a noblewoman for her self-abnegating gesture, and turns to St. Vid (sv. Vid) and the Holy Virgin from Trsat for spiritual invigoration and protection. It expresses spontaneously its joy of living during the Carnival festivites, and its freshness and youth through the numerous sporting activities.

The Town of Rijeka

Plitvice Lakes National Park is the largest among the eight national parks in Croatia (294.82 km2 in area). It was founded in 1949 and it is the oldest national park in the country. In 1979 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage register. The national park is a phenomenon of karst hydrography. The lakes are famous for travertine waterfalls and a continuous biodynamic process of travertine creation under specific ecological conditions. Travertine is a porous limestone rock formed by the deposition of calcium carbonate in the water which can create barriers, thresholds and other forms in karst rivers and streams. The ongoing process of travertine creation is especially noticeable in the waterfalls.
While the visitors enjoy the walk through the national park, continuous travertine growth creates magnificent waterfalls. Over time the water changes its course, thus leaving some barriers dry, but enticing the growth of travertine elsewhere. The described phenomenon provides a sense that the Plitvice Lakes never stay the same.
The wider area of the national park is a rich forest and meadow habitat with diverse and numerous species of plants and animals. The forest community is mostly comprised of beech and fir. The most distinguished beech and fir forest is called Čorkova uvala and it is considered to be one of the most beautiful forests in the world. 1,267 plant species have been listed so far, 75 of them being endemic, and 55 being different species of orchids. The rich fauna includes 321 species of butterflies, 161 species of birds and 21 species of bats, which were discovered in previous research of the park area.
Among large predators, the most attractive resident of the park forest is the brown bear (Ursus arctos).
One of the first researchers of this natural phenomenon, academician Ivo Pevalek, said the following in 1937: “There are waters, lakes, waterfalls and forests in other places, but there are only one Plitvice Lakes in the world. You have to see them!
