Welcome to Krk, Croatia!
The ideal geographical location is an advantage that the island of Krk has well assessed in terms of tourism. We refer to the closeness of the mainland when twenty years ago a bridge was constructed linking Krk with the mainland, making it even more accessible. Good transport links have made the island of Krk a favourite excursion destination, but also rich one-day excursions can be made form the island as well.
We most of all recommend an excursion to the Plitvica Lakes and Northern Velebit national parks. The real researcher amongst you will of course want to discover Rijeka - the centre of the Primorje-Gorski kotar County, and staying in Rijeka should include a mandatory visit to Opatija – the tourist ‘Adriatic pearl’.
Interesting is the one-day visit to Istra, where we strongly recommend a stay in its central region rather than on the coast! Finally, the island of Krk is linked to the three islands Rab, Cres and Lošinj by a ferry line which may also become destinations for your one-day excursions. Don’t miss out!
Once you’ve chosen quality accommodation based on your own criteria and gained at least a general impression of the town by getting to know its most important parts, everything is then ready for the start of your active vacation. This is what, Krk can offer:
- OLIVES, OLIVE OIL AND OLIVE-GROVES
This chapter will begin by expressing pride towards our community which has in recent times once again discovered the olive! The olive, being an original fruit of this area, a medicinal and sweet fruit, is an necessary spice for any gourmet.
Thanks to such thinking and valuing originality, the olive has gained its place in tourism and in restaurants, where you will be served with superb olive oil, and in the souvenir shops you can chose very nicely designed olive oil bottles reminding you and your loved ones of Krk.
We draw your attention to the oil shop Nono, offering the opportunity to taste olive oil, buy souvenirs, and also visit oil making where you can be informed of the whole production process for superb olive oil.
- BOATING EXCURSIONS
The summer day is best and nicest when on the seaside. We are not only referring to the beach, but also recommend daily boating excursions to neighbouring islands, to remote beaches, to the open sea where you will feel the salt in the air, on your skin...
Information on daily boating excursions is best found at the town port where you can immediately chose the boat and destination, and reserve your place. And something else, you can also eat and drink well on the boats. Treat yourself to such a day.
- DIVING - SCUBA DIVING / DIVING CENTERS
The tranquillity below the sea around the town of Krk offers an unforgettable experience. Be polite and adhere to the rules! Seek out a local diver who will be your host and guide, don’t dive on your own! For information on preparing for your diving excursion can contact the local diving club or the tourist agencies.
Here you will be informed of the diving locations, and services by the guide, places for refilling tanks, how to obtain a diving permit, in brief, all the details necessary when preparing to dive. In regards to locations, you can choose between sunken ships or diving into the deep blue which will lead you along a series of vertical walls overgrown by sea fauna into which countless swarms of fish venture.
- WAKEBOARD SKI LIFT KRK
If you want a comfortable and entertaining day, you must visit the Krk Ski lift.
One of the newest and most modern lifts in Europe, it is located in the Puntarska cove, only a few kilometres from the town of Krk. With the fantastic and exciting experience of water skiing and wakeboarding on a modern lift, on 400 m2 of premises above the sea you can eat, drink, sunbathe, swim, laze around, play cards, sing, dance, laugh at the falls or view the breathtaking tricks by world class skiers who simply adore this ski lift.
- Bicycle riding
When riding a bike during the summer days, it is best to wake early and chose the morning freshness. You can chose for your route on asphalt roads and investigate the hinterland area of the town of Krk, which covering quite a large area, extends along the western area of the island. The degree to which this route is demanding, depends on how fit you are.
The road, covering twenty or so kilometres, will lead you along a tranquil area. If you want to add culture to this recreational event through culture, head for the Franciscan monastery at Glavotok, while a special experience is offered in searching the close chapel of St. Grysogonus (12th century), completely isolated in the middle of the forest. Having chosen this route, and should you physically be up to it, you can head for the ferry pier at Valbiska and travel to the neighbouring island of Cres.
The climb ahead is not easy, but you will enjoy the natural scenes which will surely help you conquer the climb. Lovers of mountain biking can travel the same route along roads that are not asphalted. Nevertheless, no matter what route you decide to take, you will meet many bicycle enthusiasts along the way, waiving to each other as you go by. You'll surely like it!
